The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on October 17th, when the world comes together to observe the (IDEP). This significant day serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles faced by millions of people worldwide who live in poverty.
This day has its roots in a 1987 gathering in Paris, where over 100,000 people came together to honor the victims of extreme poverty. In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared October 17th as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Today, this day is a global call to action, encouraging governments, organizations, and individuals to work together to eradicate poverty and ensure that everyone has access to basic human rights.

The 2025 theme, “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment by Ensuring Respect for Families,” highlights the need to transform systems and build trust between individuals, families, and institutions. By promoting dignity and respect for all, we can work towards a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
As we commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), the Global Platform for Action reaffirms its commitment to addressing the interconnected challenges of poverty, displacement, and energy access.
Our vision is to ensure that displaced persons, host communities, and the associated humanitarian response mechanism have access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy services by 2030. We believe that energy access is a critical component in breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting dignity for all.

The IDEP theme for 2025, “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment by Ensuring Respect for Families,” resonates deeply with our mission. By providing access to energy, we can:
Support the well-being and dignity of displaced people and host communities
Enhance economic opportunities and livelihoods
Improve access to essential services like healthcare, education, and sanitation
Foster a sense of community and social cohesion
